Surface Alchemy: Texture, Pattern & Color
Join Charles Lewton-Brain for a rare, five-day master workshop exploring the rich intersection of surface, texture, and color in contemporary metalwork. For the first time, multiple decorative surface techniques are brought together in a single, immersive experience—offering a broad yet deeply informed approach to transforming metal surfaces.
This intensive focuses on developing compelling surface treatments through a combination of pattern-making, texture development, selective gold applications, patination, and chiseled surface work. Rather than isolating techniques, students will explore how these processes can be layered and combined to create nuanced, dynamic results in jewelry and small-scale metalwork.
Through demonstrations and guided experimentation, participants will gain insight into how surface decisions influence both the visual language and conceptual strength of their work. Emphasis will be placed on exploration and material response. Students can expect to leave the workshop with a collection of samples and an expanded personal vocabulary of mark-making and finish.
This workshop also offers a valuable opportunity for discussion—students are encouraged to bring questions, challenges, and ideas to the table. Charles’s depth of knowledge and teaching style create an environment where technical understanding and creative inquiry go hand in hand.
Ideal for jewelers and metalsmiths seeking to push beyond familiar finishes, this master class provides both a broad overview and meaningful depth—opening new pathways for surface-driven design.
PLEASE READ THE MATERIALS & TOOLS TAB CAREFULLY TO BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT TO BRING.
