Etching 1: Sketch-N-Etch!

During this comprehensive and hands-on technical virtual class, students will have the exciting opportunity to explore etching techniques applicable to copper, brass, and even sterling silver. This Etching 1 class will focus primarily on the immersive process of bath submersion using ferric salt and ferric nitrate solutions.

Through detailed prerecorded content, we will dive into essential preparation steps to ensure successful etching, crucial safety procedures, as well as an array of etching resist methods—from simple marker applications to more advanced photo-transferring images—allowing for a variety of creative methods.

If time permits, discussion on integrating your newly etched designs into cohesive pieces or possibilities. By the end of the class, students will walk away with a thorough understanding of how to set up their own etching workspace at home, including the necessary safety measures, preparation routines, and processes to achieve quality results.

There will be a Virtual Open Studio Hour on January 24 (11AM-12PM EST) for extra discussion, troubleshooting, and advice.

This class is the first of a two-part series. You can take one or both! If you want more, be sure to join us for the second class, Etching 2: It's Electric-Etching! which focuses teaching electro-etching on copper, brass, and sterling silver!
