Introduction to Chiseling and Carving Metal
This online class discusses and illustrates the use of chiseled metal surfaces for decorative texture effects, deep carving and introductory inlay concepts.
The making of chisels is taught, basic steel theory addressed. Converting old needle files into carving chisels is shown. The three main types of metal carving chisel shapes are shared. Chiseled surfaces are superb under transparent enamels.
Also touched on is ‘cloth area inlay’, a Japanese approach to attaching gold, silver and other foils to metal surfaces using a razor sharp chisel to prepare the surface for attaching the gold/silver foil.
This is a lecture oriented class. There will be a review class to see student work and review information.
Charles Lewton-Brain will provide pre and post-teach links and information.
