The No-Boggle Toggle: A Hollow Form Clasp with Nested Toggle

Toggle clasps may be one of the oldest, most often used mechanisms in the jewelry world, but they aren’t always the most secure, and sometimes they just aren’t substantial enough for a custom piece you’ve put hours into.

In this two-session workshop we add dimension and scale by nesting our toggle inside a hollow form, providing increased security, depth, and an architectural element that the more traditional wire toggles don’t have. The design also allows for adding safety catches that bridge the toggle, for further security.

No hollow form experience? No problem. If you can make bezel settings and have patience for sawing and filing with care, you can make them – after all, a hollow form is just a bezel with a hat!

Raw/metal materials:

These dimensions get you a round hollow toggle of approximately 1” diameter – you can gather more material to work larger or in different shapes

  • 1 x 3.5"x1.75" - 22 gaSterling Silver sheet (RioGrande)

  • 1 x 4in round wire, 18 ga, or jump rings, in metal of your choice

  • 1 x 1.5in round wire for toggle (I like 10g, but you can work with 8 – 11 g), in metal of your choice

  • 1 x 1in tubing (Must match the wire size selected – see below). Ideally, the wire nests snugly inside the tubing. If you know how, you can draw down wire and/or tubing to make a really snug match. If not, here are some tube/toggle combos you can use:

    • Otto Frei Tubing:
    • 844-3126         3.25 mm OD x 2.74 mm ID .25 mm Light Wall – use with 10 ga wire
844-3525         3.55 mm OD x 2.54 mm ID .50 mm Heavy Wall – use with 11 ga wire
844-3830         3.86 mm OD x 3.09 mm ID .40 mm Medium Wall – use with 9 ga wire
844-4535         4.57 mm OD x 3.55 mm ID .50 mm Heavy Wall – use with 8 ga wire
    • Rio Heavy Wall Tubing:
    • 100452                        3.56 mm OD x 2.54mm ID  0.51mm Heavy Wall – use with 11 ga or ream tubing for 10g wire

    • 100426                        4.12 mm OD x 3.1mm ID  0.51mm Heavy Wall – stretch wire/ream tubing for 8 ga wire

    • 100427                        4.57 mm OD x 3.48mm ID   0.51mm Heavy Wall – use with 8 ga wire
