Soldering Tips and Tricks

Put your soldering struggles behind you with a set of troubleshooting tips and tricks geared toward helping you take charge of your torch and torch setup.
In this special 2-session weekly class, students will learn new torch skills, starting with torch selection and safe setup of a torch and tank. We'll cover basic to advanced soldering techniques. Several flame working methods and approaches will be introduced, from different types of solder joints to unique ways of connecting hard-to-reach seams. 
Students are invited to bring in any soldering projects or soldering setups that may be daunting or unapproachable for a step-by-step tutorial on how to most effectively approach them. Acetylene-air, oxy-acetylene, oxy-propane, and multiple butane torches will be covered in class. 
This offering is ideal for anyone seeking to improve their skills at the torch, brush up on soldering know-how, and gain confidence working with fire!

Meet the instructor

Joy Raskin has been a silversmith since 1984 and has exhibits throughout the United States, Ireland and New Zealand, showcasing both her jewelry and flatware designs. Joy is a native of New Hampshire, having attended public schools in Manchester and Concord and was accepted as a member of the League of NH Craftsmen while still in high school. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Joy is an instructor at Metalwerx in Waltham, MA, The Craft Center in NH, Sharon Art Center, and many other schools.

Joy has received many awards for her work. She was commissioned by the NH State Council on the Arts to create the Cultural Access Award for the Governor’s Awards in the Arts in 2001. Her work is included in many collections, including the White House and Smithsonian Institution. Joy's work is found in multiple galleries throughout New England, including the League of NH Craftsmen Galleries, Boston Society of Arts & Crafts, Guilford Art Center, Millbrook Gallery, and others.

Materials & Tools

There is a $10 studio fee for this class that is payable upon registration. There will also be a materials kit fee payable to the instructor during class of (waiting on this information from the instructor). The materials kit covers paste flux; 1" of brass solder; 1" of copper solder; silver wire (about 6" per type--extra easy, easy, medium, and hard) and sheet solder; bronze and copper brazing rods; as well as base metal wire and sheet for our soldering samples.

Students should bring their own soldering projects to tackle during class time.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the unpredictable cost of precious metals, starting in Fall 2026, Metalwerx will no longer provide unlimited solder for use in the studio. Your instructor will order the amount needed for use during class.

Students should bring
  • Closed-toe shoes - required in the Metalwerx studio
  • Any problem soldering jobs
  • Any work that needs multiple torches to get soldered
  • Any project designs that need soldering suggestions
  • Any metal from gold, silver, copper, brass, bronze, and nickel
  • Soldering setup you aren't sure how to approach
